Of the Firebirds - Release
I’m releasing my second project on itch: this zine. I made something of a vow to myself near the start of the year that I wouldn’t publish anything large this year (I’m saving that for next year)… BUT I put Four Zines of Elsewhere together in 2020 and self-published it already, so I decided I’m allowed to adapt its contents for itch.io.
This is the second of the four zines: Of the Firebirds. I stand by my tag line: “entry in medieval bestiary as interactive zine.” It’s quite simple structurally; you can’t even go backward, let alone take branching paths; more complexity is coming down the pike for later works.
Tools are the same as for Twelve Days: MuseScore (for music), analog art supplies + Photoshop (for art), vanilla JavaScript, and love.
Someday I’m going to want to make something downloadable. Someday I’ll want more than vanilla JavaScript and love can give me easily. I have Unity, started to learn it last year, will pick it up again when I need physics or three-dimensional space… But for now I get that magical hands-on feeling of using almost the first tech I ever learned to bring my vision to life.
The new thing here is the console logging – if you open your browser’s dev tools and go to the console (Google how to get to them if you don’t know), you’ll see a sort of counterpoint to the original text.
